Orientation. You start by scheduling an orientation session. The session generally last 1-1-1/2 hours, and both parties must attend together. The cost of the session is $75. The orientation session does not obligate you to undertake the process, nor obligate us to accept you as clients. Some cases are not appropriate for mediation, and that will be determined at the orientation. The orientation session will include time to answer your questions.
If you decide to go forward, and we decide to take your case, you will be provided with our divorce mediation manual, and two books which will be very helpful to you in your divorce: Getting Divorced without Ruining Your Life and Getting to Yes. You will also be provided with a financial disclosure statement to fill out, and a list of documents to provide. This is somewhat similar to the "discovery" process in divorce litigation, but a lot less burdensome. Your "factfinder" session will then be scheduled.
Factfinder. At this meeting (usually with Kathy Teeple) your financial disclosure statements and your document production will be reviewed, and any questions cleared up. Sometimes additional information or documents are needed to enable us to fully understand each party’s legal and financial situation, and for each party to understand the other’s. At the end of the factfinder you will be given some "homework" and your first meeting with Don Caruthers will be scheduled. If there are children, a parenting session with Kathy Teeple will also be scheduled to negotiate your parenting agreement.
